Binode Behari Mukherjee

Binode Behari Mukherjee (1904 – 1980) : One of the pioneers of Indian Modern Art, he was the student of Nandalal Bose in the early days of Kala Bhavana. A painter and a muralist Binode Behari’s work ranges from murals to collage, from wood-cuts to calligraphy, for him art is basically a principle of making and doing and its process is more important rather the end-object. He suffered from ill health and poor vision from his childhood, and a later phase of life when he completely lost his sight,a different kind of essence came into his creative world. The eminent film maker Satyajit Roy made a remarkable documentary film “The Inner Eye” on Binode Behari – which is a rare experience to see the artist at work.
A professor emeritus of Visva Bharati, Binode Behari Mukherjee was awardedDeshikottama by Viswa Bharati, Sanmtiniketan.1271
